Penguins in Central London

7 12 2009

Yesterday, the Alternative Energy Academy was raising awareness of Londoners in Central London. Walking down the Oxford Street, giving out leaflets encouraging people to sustainable actions and a speech in the Speakers’ Corner in front of over a hundred people attracted a lot of attention. We received a very positive feedback from the people we talked with, which – once again – reassured us about the legitimacy of our campaign.

Global Warming from a pengiun’s perspective

4 12 2009

We had an assembly presentation in a local primary school yesterday. We taught over 100 pupils aged 8 to 12  about Global Warming, the role  of alternative energy resources as well as sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle. The kids showed a huge enthusiasm and promised to do little things in order to have a more sustainable life style. They also wished the penguins a save journey home…

Article by AEA published in Generation C

It is important for us to improve the awareness of alternative energies and sustainability. Therefore we have published an article in Generation C. Have a look at the article here.

The AEA has had a workshop in Hugh Myddelton school

22 11 2009

The workshop was with a class of enthusiastic 9-10 year olds Thursday the 19th. They were taught the concept of energy and how alternative energy sources are important for sustainable development. The second session will be the coming Tuesday. David explained climate change from the perspective of a penguin. Have a look at some of the photos below!

AEA organises alternative energy insight day at City University

17 11 2009

The AEA has completed an alternative energy insight day at City University for 35 students in Year 12, (aged 17-18) from Harris City Academy. The day was organised and facilitated by members of the AEA and some activities were coordinated and delivered by Student Ambassadors from City University.

Activities during the day included; visiting the photovoltaic array at the university, a workshop on global warming and alternative energy sources, a Copenhagen Summit 2009 simulation and a visit to the engineering department. The group was divided into teams for the day and they competed for points during some activities – we are pleased to announce Team Four was the overall winner with 19 points.

The day was a fantastic opportunity for the AEA team to work together with City University to both engage young people from a school in London and involve undergraduate students from City who were able to join the AEA team for the day.

The AEA participated in the Lord Mayor Show

15 11 2009

The AEA team participated in the Lord Mayor Show this Saturday. The parade is an 800 years old tradition symbolising the inauguration of the Lord Mayor of London. It is an exclusive opportunity for organisations to promote their activities. The parade had national coverage on BBC1.

Despite the horrible weather with horizontal rain, a lot of people turned up and the day was a success. Have a look at the photos below!

School class to see the solar panels at City University

10 11 2009

The AEA in cooperation with the Widening Participation Scheme has arranged for 40 secondary school pupils to visit the solar panels on the roof of the main campus building at City University. This will be a step in the work we do to improve the awareness of the local community of sustainability issues and alternative energy solutions in their environment. The pupils will also be shown the engineering department at City University and understand how they can study a related subject at a university level. The event will take place on the 17th of November.

Great Support from the City University

27 10 2009

The City University Centre for Career and Skills Development has published a press release about our competition.

We very much appreciate this and we believe that via the great staff at the department we will be able to engage more City University students than we ever hoped for!

Back from a weekend in the Lake District

19 10 2009

We have just returned from an action-packed weekend in the Lake District national park! The trip was organised by nPower and was part of the Future Leadership Challenge. Among the activities was a 14-mile hike/run in the stunning nature of the national park, climbing several peaks. We also did night orienteering and canoeing. In the challenges we came second overall! This was an exceptional opportunity to get tighter as a team. Our chanting is believed to still be echoing in the mountains.

It was also a good chance to meet the other 9 finalist teams and to learn about their contributions. On the schedule was also an inspiring talk by the polar explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan OBE.

Now we just have to improver our standing one place for the main judgement in December. Have a look at the photos!

The AEA is among the top ten contestants!

10 10 2009

Our project has been selected as one of the top ten teams in the Antarctica 2010 challenge. The Antarctica 2010 Challenge is a competition run by nPower for students to create an alternative energy project with an impact!  Getting into the top ten projects means that we can keep working on inspiring and educating school children about how they can all change the world a little bit! Please have a look at our short video:

The project has two initiatives. The first is to help a London school set up Geothermal Energy at a significantly reduced cost with our partner Intelligent Fluid Solutions. This will not only be a sound financial investment, but can also be used to teach secondary school children the importance of alternative energy and about the technology out there. We will run a teaching project together with a school to get the children actively involved and going out to see what sort of alternative energy solutions exist in their local area.

We will keep you updated on what is going exciting news!

Yours,

Einar
